Weekend Round-Up: Snap Back To Reality

I’m back! I can honestly say that I was happy to be able to share a few photos here and there while I was at camp. I was looking forward to my short break from blogging (all that brainstorming, photographing, editing, and writing) but as soon as I didn’t do it, I missed it. The break did give me some creative inspiration, though, so I’m looking forward to delving into some of those projects in the up-coming weeks. You know what they say: you can take the girl out of the kitchen and away from the sewing machine, but you can’t take the kitchen and sewing machine out of the girl… Uh..or something like that.

Anyways. I’ve been home for just over a week now and so I decided that it was about due time for me to share some instagrams. Below are some of the exciting (or not so exciting) moments that snapped me back into the reality of my every day life and out of camp mode. Goodbye constantly dirty feet, acceptably messy hair, and days off spent diving into the warm lake. Hello good hygiene, Kitchen Aid mixer, and matching clothing.

It’s good to be back.

Turn Up the Oven: Top Three Favourite Summer Bakes (so far)!

I’m just finishing up my last few days working at a camp and for some reason I find myself constantly thinking about baking. I decided I was going to take a little sabbatical from the blogsphere while I was up here, but I couldn’t resist the satisfaction of typing away at my computer, editing photos, and hitting the Publish button. Although I’m not creating any new projects, I did have a few photos stored up on my camera from the past few months that I wanted to share. So I have compiled this list of my Top Three Favourite Summer Bakes (so far).

Strawberries scream summer. They are a delicious summer berry that can be used in a variety of baked goods. Remember how I shared my recipe for Strawberry-Chocolate Chip Loaf? I also pureed them with some mango and banana to make homemade popsicles. They are very refreshing on hot summer days and the bright red colour that they add makes any food look delicious.

I made these vanilla cupcakes with strawberry buttercream and a marshmallow fondant flower decal for a birthday. They were light and delicious yet were packed with sweetness. I used homemade strawberry jam to bring the flavour to the buttercream instead of raw strawberries. I loved the flecks of red in the frosting, highlighting the presence of the strawberry. I only got to taste-test one so I’ll have to make them again to put them to the true test (…if I must).

Two words: ice cream. Ice cream cones are the epitome of summer treats. After all, they don’t sing “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” for no reason. But in my opinion (which may be a bit biased), a good cookie always beats ice cream. So why not combine the two?

A couple months ago, my sister came home from a trip with a new cookie cutter set in hand. Not only did the set contain an ice cream sundae cutter but it also had two different ice cream cone cutters. When I received a cookie order at the beginning of June, I jumped on the opportunity to make these little guys. I flooded them with a basic butter-based icing, adapting the colours and flavours. They are the perfect little treat for snacking on and the best part is that they don’t melt!

Fudgsicles, popsicles, creamsicles, oh my! I know I’ve shared these treats once before but they were so delicious that they definitely hold the number one spot on my summer treat list. As I mentioned in the previous post, creamsicles are one of my favourite treats. The combination of the orange and the creamy vanilla is incredible. It is so refreshing and satisfying.

I’ve baked up quite a few things so far this summer (even though I’ve taken the past three weeks off). I’ve felt more and more inspired by different summer flavours and I can’t wait to transform them into something tasty. Raspberries, coconut, and new cookie cutter shapes are all on my radar. I can’t wait to test some new recipes and share them.

To finish off, I am going to share some instagram photos of a few of the treats that didn’t quite make the list–they are still tasty none-the-less! Mini cupcakes, homemade popsicles, s’mores brownies, and more!

Weekend Round-Up: First Week of Camp is Done!

The sun is shining, the kids are smiling, and the birds are singing up north because the first week of camp was a huge success! The week was absolutely beautiful. I was lucky enough to snap a few photos here and there and am extremely excited to share them with you. I’ve had some incredible moments this past week and experienced joy in many ways. These are just a fraction of the photos that represent the past week…

It has been a wonderful week. I’m still feeling eager to test out some new recipes and try out my new “brother” (horray for sewing machines!) but I have to wait until I get home. Until then, I’ll keep myself busy with frequent instagram posts. Here’s to two more wonderful weeks at camp before I head back home. I hope you are enjoying your summer!

Summer, Sweet Summertime!

Hey guys! I just wanted to write a quick post before I head up North for a few weeks. This will be my sixth summer on staff at the best camp in the entire world! I’ve decided to share a few photos so you can understand why I keep going back…

Ironically, my new sewing machine just arrived in the mail yesterday (it would arrive the day before I leave!). Although I’m sad that I won’t get to break it in right away, I have the manual packed in my bag so I can read up on it while I’m away. You can expect lots of projects when I return!

I want to wish you all a very safe and enjoyable July! I hope you can find the small but special moments to appreciate every single day. I hope you are blessed in numerous ways! Feel free to follow me on Instagram or Twitter (@amberwide) to keep up with my adventures.

Weekend Round-Up: The Sure Signs of Summer

This past Thursday, we all celebrated the summer solstice. Not only does June 21st mark the first official day of summer, but it is also the day that us north of the equator will see the most amount of sunlight. I didn’t need to wait for the officialness that June 21st brought though. I’ve been celebrating the beautiful signs of summer for the past few weeks, soaking up all the sunshine and summer that I can get. In honour of the new season, I have decided to share some summer-themed photos from my past few weeks for this week’s Weekend Round-Up!

Later this week, I will be heading up north to work at a summer camp for three weeks. Due to my duties there (as well as the terrible internet connection), I will most likely be absent from blogging for that time. I’m thinking of it as more of a sabbatical though. I have a few projects lined up and look forward to the projects that the temporary break inspires in me. Until I return, I hope you all have a wonderful July full of lots of summery activities. Stay safe and soak in the rays. I know there will be lots of photos to share when I return!
